These are the Soundcore Space One headphones. Anker is positioning these as a more affordable alternative to the Sony WH1000 XM5 over-ear headphones…only without the flagship price tag…in fact, at launch, these will retail for under 100 dollars…but how good can they really be at that price point…that's what your about to find out.

The Space One headphones have flagship features like the Sony XM5s, such as adaptive active noise cancelling, a transparency mode, wear-detect sensors, fantastic battery life and even Hi-Res audio support.

What It Comes With

In the box, you'll find the Space One headphones themselves & in the side compartment, you'll discover a user manual a canvas pouch for transporting them without getting them scratched.

There's also a nicely colour-coded analogue audio cable & a USB C charging cable. Whilst we're talking about charging these.

You'll get 45 hours with ANC on, 55 hours with ANC off, and just 5 minutes of charge can give you up to 4 hours of playback.

Design

Anyway, let me show you the design. These are the baby blue variant. You can also get them in cream or black. The earcups are pretty large, which is good because if you have relatively large ears, they should still fit entirely inside them, which assists with noise cancellation.

How the earcups adjust is really lovely & will help you get a comfortable fit. They call it the 8-degree floating axis design.

Inside the left earcup, you'll notice the wear-detect sensor. This is an excellent feature, as when you remove the headphones, your music will stop and resume when you put them back on…this feature will also help save power.

The headband has some depth on the padding, so you get any pinching or discomfort at the top of your head. The ear cups also have a nice amount of padding.

And behind the fabric that indicates the left and right side are 40mm drivers. These are a good size for headphones at this price point…especially when considering the XM5s use a smaller 30mm driver.

The controls consist of tactile, clicky buttons. On the left earcup are the power and ANC buttons. On the right is the volume rocker & play pause button.

A touch sensor on the left earcup brings another XM5 feature to the Space Ones. If you hold your palm on the left earcup, it turns off ANC and turns on transparency mode.

And if that sounds like a lot of effort, there's even an easy chat feature. So all you need to do is talk to active transparency mode, and when you stop, the ANC switches back on.

There are three mics on board. A voice pickup mic and Two for the noise cancelling.

Noise Cancelling

And for those who may be new to ANC, active noise cancelling. It works because the exterior mics pick up the ambient sounds around, such as plane noise, and play it in reverse phase inside the headphones, which cancels out some of the ambient noise. So you can turn down the crowd.

And you should hear it for yourself. watch the video at around 04:00 mark.

And then there's this mode of ANC. Trust me, this mode is invaluable for long journeys.

Sound Quality

Sound quality is among the most important factors for headphones. My first impressions of the Space Ones and the Soundcore signature sound are as follows.

You get crisp details, the mids are good, and the bass is very present. And while they sound good with your standard MP3 audio, you will notice a jump-up in audio quality when listening to Hi-Res audio, thanks to LDAC.

The best way to describe the out-of-the-box EQ is that it's an excellent all-rounder. It's excellent, and Soundcore has left headroom to turn things up if you want.

EQs

And what I really appreciate about and I'm sure you will too. Soundcore has many preset EQs already dialled in by professionals for many popular genres.

But you'll love the Soundcore exclusive Hear ID feature even more. Using the Hear ID, the app dials in the perfect EQ for you. By going through the step-by-step process.

Why they're such good value

Now, I think the Space ones are a great value proposition. They're very comfortable, the sound quality is excellent and customisable.

They do have a headphone jack, which means you can easily plug them into an in-flight entertainment system, gaming device or laptop & listen even when out of power.

The battery life is impressive and more than enough for any flight. If you need them to commute to and from work or study, you only need to charge that at the most, once a week.

And if you're a true music lover, you'll love listening to Hi-Res audio here. The significant 40mm drivers deliver precise details and the perception of a large soundstage.

And the ANC does a surprisingly good job at cancelling not just ambient noise but also people's voices…it really is good.

And Anker says the ANC is twice as good at blocking voices as the previous version. This is likely why the tagline is 'Turn down the crowd.'
