To help explain this new era, we spoke with Molly Wade, Product Manager for the Amazon Alexa and Echo team.
"Alexa Plus has been completely redesigned from the ground up," says Wade. "There’s loads of things that it can do now that it couldn't do before. For starters, it’s so much more conversational. You can have a free-flowing, natural conversation without saying 'Alexa' every single time."
According to Wade, the upgrades focus on three key areas:
Street Smarts: She can answer questions on virtually any topic with greater intelligence.
Personalization: She gets to know you and your family to make recommendations more relevant.
Real-World Action: Most importantly, she can take action—from booking tables via OpenTable to managing your favorite music providers.
1. Advanced Home Awareness
Alexa Plus now features a much better understanding of spatial references. It knows where you are in the house and which smart devices are around you, making it easier to move audio between speakers.
User: "Alexa, let’s move it to the left."
Alexa Plus: "Okay."
User: "Alexa, let’s play this everywhere."
Alexa Plus: "Moving your music wherever I can."
This intelligence even extends to your security. You can now ask Alexa Plus to search your Ring doorbell footage for specific events:
"Did that package get delivered on Monday?"
"One sec. Yes, I found two package delivery events on Monday the 16th of March..."
2. Effortless Smart Home Routines
Previously, creating a complex smart home routine required a bit of tech-savviness. With Alexa Plus, you can build them in seconds using only your voice. Because it has access to your calendar, photos, and smart tech, it can coordinate your entire morning without you touching your phone.
Example Routine Request:
"Create me a routine for 7 a.m. Turn on the lights and make them white. Turn on the humidifier and the diffuser. Tell me if I need an umbrella. Play me the news."
3. A Smarter Kitchen Assistant
Alexa Plus now understands the dietary preferences of your entire household. By knowing what ingredients you have in your fridge, it can suggest recipes that everyone will enjoy while avoiding things they don’t like.
Contextual Cooking: If you have guests over, Alexa Plus can cross-reference their dietary needs (like vegetarianism or allergies) with your available ingredients.
Smart Shopping: If you're missing an ingredient, just ask her to add it to your list. She can even monitor the price and remind you to buy it when the price drops.
Dining Out: Too tired to cook? Alexa Plus works in tandem with OpenTable to book a reservation at your favorite spot and automatically add it to your calendar.
